Ok, I am feeling a bit comfortable writing this article, I mean, really! Because my one of the hobby is to Building a Budget PC, a desktop computer. From my let’s say 10th grade(Class 10), I used a desktop PC in my room, that time was for Pentium 4, and I loved using my first Pentium 4 PC with 512MB RAM. Yes, it was 512MB only RAM on my PC. And it works just amazing at that time. Purchasing that PC managing my family was very struggle because I am from a traditional middle-class village family where the study was only focused on things recommended by guardians.

By the way, it was my time more than a decade ago. But this generation has got a Core i9 processor in common even with the 10th Generation CPU available in the market. Also, AMD has been developed a better grip on the desktop market too. But we will only talk about Intel-based budget PC building tips. Because, in my experience, I found the Intel-based Motherboard and processor are long-lasting and most of the time don’t drop the performance. Where Ryzen and AMD has a lot of complaint about dropping the performance after a certain time of use. Let’s start the discussion on the topics.

Steps involved building a budget desktop PC

Every work has some ideal steps that should be followed in order to get the best results. This is not an alternative. We have to revise some steps to make sure what actually we need in which budget. Below is the checklist before going to the market to buy a budget PC.

Find out the need and budget

Everything is not for everyone. A thing that is very comfortable for someone does not mean that would be comfortable for everyone. In purchasing a budget PC, we should think about our necessity and budget a bit. Think, for what purpose you are planning to build your budget PC. For example, someone needs more space to store media files or movies for entertainment. Someone needs better performance with minimum storage like 100 or 200 GB is enough. Someone may look for a budget gaming PC. So, think about what you will do with the PC you are going to build. If you need more storage for media or gaming then you have to keep a 1TB or 2TB HDD, not SSD, because of 1TB or 2TB SSD is a way higher price than HDD. But if need performance or you planned to do some light work like office work, Internet browsing, coding, etc. This can require better performance in the very near future then you will be in need of a good performance PC rather than big storage.

Also, make sure the budget. A higher price is not always mean a high-performance PC. Same, lower the price does not always direct a lower performance PC. You do not need to get stretched about the budget. Keep this as you can afford that time. Spending more money on a PC emotionally can keep you through a different problem. So, fix the budget and make sure which you will use the pc purpose of.

I recommend and suggest going for performance rather than buying a storage focusing PC. Because, you can add additional storage later, upgrading the performance always involves more money sometimes can spend the money to near buying a new one. And I will go to the next step for a budget performance-based PC.

Deciding on some common components

Common components are RAM, Storage, Casting, etc. For a budget PC building list, we will choose a casing that has a power supply included. Someone can think individual cases and power supplies can work well, I agree with that. But here we’re going to build a budget PC, which means keep the cost minimum for a standard PC at least. And a casing with a power supply included could be a key selection. I understand the power supply can have low wats but it can work just fine. Also, the low-budget casing can have the low build quality, but hey, we are not going to fight with it. So, no RGB, no individual case, and power supply. Let’s get a casing, an ATX casing which costs around $25 USD or 2000 in Bangladeshi Taka. Cheap, right? Yeah, this is a budget selection.

For RAM, we suggest going for DDR4 RAM and 8GB in size. 4GB doesn’t work well now with any windows. 4GB RAM can drop the performance even can get slow in some very low consumption tasks. So, 8GB is fine. And no need for 16GB too. For now, we will not go for any GPU. Build a PC, run it for your purpose, then decide if any additional GPU is needed or not. An 8GB DDR4 RAM can cost around $50 USD or 4000 BDT. Note it. We will sum up everything later.

Now come to the SSD. If you have no plan going for a terabytes space then at least 256GB is a great choice. Otherwise, 128GB SSD can work too. A Windows 10 or 8.1 can take around 10-15GB in total with all the built-in apps. Then you have to install your necessary software like Photoshop, Illustrator, Code editor, Internet browser, Office Application, etc. For all this, I believe 50GB is just enough. Then you have more than 60GB available. I think if you don’t store any unnecessary files, 60GB is just fine for the store project file, practice file, a few movies which I suggest removing after watching, is fine for daily use. If you have doubt then go for 256GB SSD, that’s a secure selection. But as the performance depends on the storage where the Windows files basically located, you don’t need the biggest fast speed storage to run the computer fast. So, I suggest going for 128 now, and adding a 1TB or 2TB HDD later for use as secondary storage or backup. There is a lot of well-known SSD manufacturer like A-Data, Transcend, Apacer, etc. A 128GB SSD can cost around $30 USD and a 256GB SSD can cost $40 USD versus, 2500 and 3500 in BDT. Keep a note of SSD price too.

Choosing Mainboard and Processor Building a Budget PC

Mainboard and processor is the main investment in buying a desktop PC. Other components also depend on those parts. Like, RAM size and generation, GPU version and generation, etc. As we already decided to go for DDR4 RAM, you have to keep in mind that your mainboard should have to support DDR4 RAM. Don’t worry, most of the mainboard nowadays supports DDR4 RAM. You can’t go wrong choosing an Asus mainboard, or a Gigabyte one. Also, search for an 8th/9th Gen Processor-supported mainboard. We will try to stay updated so that we can upgrade our pc easily if we want in the near future. Also, we will find one which has at least one HDMI port, and M2 SSD support can also be an advantage, but not mandatory. In that case, there are a few good budget mainboards from Asus and Gigabyte on the market now. Let’s say,  Asus PRIME H310M-E R2.0 is one of them, also, Asus offers Asus TUF H310M-PLUS which Asus called a gaming motherboard. Both have an HDMI port, 32GB RAM supports, M2 SSD supports, and obviously 8th/9th Gen i7-DualCore Processor supports. Which matches our requirements quite well.

From Gigabyte, I also found 2 good options right now in the market which cover our needs. Gigabyte GA-H310M H and Gigabyte GA-H310N where both support 32GB DDR4 RAM, have 1 M2 slot, have HDMI and support 8th/9th Gen Core i7-DualCore Processors. Asus costs around $85-$95 USD which means 7000-8000 in BDT. Also, Gigabyte costs $75-$85 which goes to 6000-7000 in BDT. Both can be a good option but based on the market statistics, Gigabyte offers better cooling, Asus offers better performance and lifespan in overall comparison. I suggest going for Asus, but Gigabyte also will not be a wrong selection.

For the processor, I hardly suggest taking a Core-i5 like Intel 9th Gen Coffee Lake Core i5 9400F 2.9GHz-4.10GHz 6 Core, 9MB Cache Processor which costs around $170 USD and around 14000 in BDT. If you think this is a little tough to adjust within your budget, then go for 9th Gen Core-i3 which will cost around $100 USD which means around 8000 in BDT. Don’t underestimate the Core-i3 Processor. Surely it will perform lower than the Core-i5 model but you can barely notice that with heavy loaded apps only or when gaming. Also, if you upgrade the RAM with an additional 4GB or 8GB later with Core-i3, it will perform near Core-i3 with 8GB if you use heavy-loaded apps/games.

So, let’s sum up!

So, building a budget pc with the latest and fairly enough standard CPU, we chose a casing with a built-in power supply, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD, 9th Gen DDR4 Gigabyte Mainboard with 9th Gen Core i3 Processor. The cost should be around $300 in total which means around 25000 in BDT. If someone has a little more budget, I suggest upgrading the processor first to Core-i5. If, has more capacity to increase the budget, also upgrade to 256GB SSD instead of 128GB.

We haven’t discussed the monitor above because everyone has a different choice for Monitor like brand, size, model, etc. I just suggest at least take a 22″ FHD monitor and find which has less Bazzel. Now monitors are cheap too, you will find so many good budget 22″ monitors for only $100.
